Our History

Our Story
Brown Funeral Home was established in the year 1934 by E.I. Brown and Adelene Parker Brown at what was known at the time as 902 North Meridian Avenue in Laurel, Mississippi. During this time, there were only 2 negro funeral establishments serving Jones and the surrounding Counties during this era. Unfortunately, Mr. and Mrs. Brown did not have any children of their own. They had a nephew named Melvin Daniels whom they helped rear. In 1951, Melvin Daniels became a licensed funeral director and embalmer in the state of Mississippi. With his aunt Adelene, he helped run Brown Funeral Home after the untimely death of E.I. Brown. During the early 1970s Brown Funeral Home became incorporated, and the name Brown Mortuary Incorporated became official, serving Jones, Jasper, Clarke, Covington, Smith and Wayne Counties. After 65 years of service to the community, in April of 1999, Mrs. Adelene Brown passed and the funeral home was received by her nephew, Melvin Daniels Sr., and he oversaw the everyday affairs of Brown Mortuary Incorporated until his untimely death in May of 2010. After 91 years of service Brown Mortuary Inc. is still a pillar of the community in which it has served and is run by a team of licensed funeral service professionals.
